Kedarnath Tour Package for Family: Planning Guide
Key takeaways
- Most mixed-age families do best with a private 4-5 day road package and helicopter seats only for members who cannot trek.
- Family/senior-style packages were listed from about Rs 25,000 per person twin sharing (Namasteindiatrip, 24 Sep 2026).
- Split the family by mobility: fliers, pony/palki/pithu riders and trekkers, with one agreed meeting point.
- One IRCTC HeliYatra user ID books up to 2 tickets of 6 passengers each; every member needs Uttarakhand yatra registration.
- The 2026 health advisory, as reported, asks elderly pilgrims and those from other states to get a check-up 2-3 weeks before travel.
For a Kedarnath tour package for family groups with mixed ages, the best fit is usually a private 4-5 day road package from Haridwar, Dehradun or Delhi, with helicopter seats only for members who cannot trek. Family and senior-style packages were listed from about Rs 25,000 per person on twin sharing, and helicopter seats are booked separately on IRCTC HeliYatra.
That package price is one operator's listing (Namasteindiatrip, last checked 24 September 2026), not a fixed rate. This guide is written by an independent information site that sells no packages and books no tickets. It helps you plan a Kedarnath yatra with family: choose a package type, decide who in the family flies, rides or walks to Kedarnath Temple, and handle the registration and booking limits that catch families out.
Kedarnath tour package for family: what to choose
Every Kedarnath trip has the same backbone. You drive from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun into the hills, usually stay at Guptkashi or nearby, reach the road head at Sonprayag and Gaurikund, and then cover the last stretch to the temple on foot, on a pony, in a palki or by helicopter. A good Kedarnath family tour package leaves room for different members to do that last stretch in different ways.
Season matters too. The temple closes for winter around the second week of November in 2026, and the exact closing date is announced after Dussehra, so a family planning a late-season trip should keep its dates flexible and check the announcement before paying in full.
Package types families actually book
The table shows family-relevant packages as listed by two operators. They are not like-for-like: some include hotels and transport only, one includes helicopter tickets, and prices are per person on twin sharing unless stated.
| Package (as listed) | Duration | Listed price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium / Senior Care (Namasteindiatrip), pickup from any city | 4 nights / 5 days | From Rs 25,000 per person, twin sharing | Families travelling with parents who need a slower pace |
| Kedarnath + Tungnath + Chopta (Namasteindiatrip) | 5 nights / 6 days | From Rs 19,500 per person, twin sharing | Fit families with teenagers who want more time in the hills |
| Do Dham (Namasteindiatrip), from Delhi or Haridwar | 7 nights / 8 days | From Rs 29,500 per person, twin sharing | Families with a full week who want a two-shrine circuit |
| Same-day helicopter yatra from Dehradun (Namasteindiatrip) | 1 day | Rs 85,000 per person | Very short trips where everyone can fly; costly for a whole family |
| Kedarnath Heli Family Tour from Dehradun (Chalbanjare) | 4 days | Price on request | Families who want the helicopter tickets handled inside the package |
The Chalbanjare itinerary shows how a family heli package is usually shaped: Dehradun to Guptkashi via Devprayag on day 1, a helicopter round trip from Guptkashi to Kedarnath on day 2, Guptkashi to Rishikesh on day 3, and Rishikesh sightseeing before returning to Dehradun on day 4. Families flying in can reach Dehradun through Jolly Grant Airport.
Split the family by mobility: who flies, who rides, who walks
Most operator packages put the whole family on one mode. That rarely suits a group with a toddler, two fit adults and a grandparent with a knee problem. The trek from Gaurikund is about 16 km one way (sources give anywhere from 14 to 18 km), and operators note that ponies, palkis and pithus are available at Gaurikund for people who cannot walk it. A pithu (kandi) is a basket carried by a single porter, used mainly for children and lighter passengers.
| Family member | Sensible mode | Why | Plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infant or toddler | Travels with the parent's mode; on the helicopter, an infant under 2 rides on a parent's lap | Too young to walk the route; carriers and laps are the practical options | Cold, altitude, feeding and nappy changes on a long day |
| School-age child | Walk part of the way with an adult, with a pithu or pony as backup | Many children manage stretches but tire before 16 km | Agree in advance where the child switches to a carrier |
| Fit adult or teenager | Trek from Gaurikund | Cheapest option and the traditional route | An early start so the walk is not rushed |
| Parent aged 60 or more | Helicopter from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, or palki | Avoids the long climb; from the helipad it is about 500 m on a paved path to the temple | Medical check-up before travel; a palki is available if even that walk is hard |
| Member with a heart, breathing or diabetes condition | Decide with a doctor; usually helicopter or palki rather than the trek | The 2026 health advisory lists these groups as at higher risk at altitude | Carry medicines and the check-up report |
For the members who will fly, our Kedarnath helicopter booking guide explains how IRCTC HeliYatra booking, check-in and cancellation work. Children's tickets, infant rules and the documents to carry are covered in detail in our guide to Kedarnath helicopter rules for children and infants, and current carriage rates are in our Kedarnath doli and palki charges guide.
When the family splits, agree on a few things before the day starts. Pick one meeting point near the temple, set a rough time to regroup, and make sure every group has charged phones, water, warm layers and some cash. The trekkers will usually arrive hours after the helicopter group, so decide whether the fliers wait at the top or start the return. Keep the group's registration letter with whoever leads each part.
Private or group package for a family?
Namasteindiatrip's advice is blunt: if anyone in your group is above 60, go private. That is one operator's opinion, but when you compare any Kedarnath package for senior citizens and kids, the reasons behind it hold. A private car stops when your parents or children need it to, and the driver works to your pace rather than a coach timetable.
| Factor | Private package | Group package |
|---|---|---|
| Pace and rest stops | Set by your family | Set by the group schedule |
| Start point | Can be any city (one operator lists any-city pickup for its senior-care package) | Fixed start, often Haridwar or Delhi |
| Room choices | Easier to ask for connecting or family rooms | Standard twin or triple allocation |
| Changing plans for weather or health | Possible if the operator agrees | Hard: the group moves on |
| Cost direction | Higher per person, especially for small families | Lower per person |
| Suits | Families with elders, toddlers or mixed fitness | Fit adults travelling on a budget |
A large family can also ask an operator to quote a private vehicle with hotels only, and book helicopter seats separately.
Child policies, rooms and what packages usually exclude
Child policies vary by operator, so treat this as one example only. Chalbanjare's heli family tour lists an extra bed for children aged 10 and above, a crib or no bed for children aged 5 to 10, and complimentary stay for children below 5 unless specified. The same package includes stay, breakfast and dinner, non-AC transport and helicopter tickets, but excludes pony or palki hire, room heaters and special puja.
Those exclusions matter more for a family than for a solo pilgrim. Heaters in Guptkashi or Sonprayag hotels, a palki for a grandparent and a pithu for a child can add up quickly, and none are in the base price. Ask for the child policy and the exclusions list in writing before you pay.
Booking for a family: registration and helicopter limits
Two separate systems apply. First, yatra registration is mandatory for every member. The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board runs it on the official Uttarakhand registration and tourist care portal, where you create a tour, add the number of tourists and download a registration letter with a QR code. The tourist helpline is 1364.
Second, helicopter seats are sold on heliyatra.irctc.co.in, with fares fixed by UCADA. Per IRCTC HeliYatra's instructions, a Group ID lets you book several pilgrims together, while a Unique Registration Number books one person. Each user ID can make at most 2 tickets, with up to 6 passengers per ticket. In practice:
- A family of up to 6 fliers fits on one ticket.
- 7 to 12 fliers need two tickets from the same user ID.
- More than 12 fliers need a second user ID.
- A single member can still be booked with their own Char Dham registration number even if the family registered as a group.
Confirm these limits on the portal before booking, as IRCTC can change them. Infants under 2 travel on a parent's lap but must be declared at booking.
Health checks for elders and children
Kedarnath sits at about 3,583 m in Rudraprayag district, and the 2026 health advisory pays particular attention to travel above 2,700 m. As reported by ETV Bharat on 15 April 2026, the Uttarakhand Health Department's 2026 Char Dham advisory asks pilgrims, especially those coming from other states and elderly pilgrims, to get a medical check-up two to three weeks before travel and to carry the report and their medicines. It names elderly people and those with heart disease, diabetes or breathing problems as at higher risk.
The same advisory recommends drinking at least 2 litres of fluids a day, not travelling on an empty stomach, acclimatising gradually, and avoiding alcohol and smoking. More than 1,350 health staff were deployed for the 2026 yatra, and the helplines are 104 and 108. Namasteindiatrip separately advises a check-up for anyone aged 55 and above. In any Kedarnath family trip plan, build at least one night at a mid-altitude stop such as Guptkashi into the plan so children and elders are not rushed up in a single day.
Questions to ask a package operator
- Is the helicopter included, and if so, who books the IRCTC seats and under whose user ID?
- Who completes the Uttarakhand yatra registration for each family member?
- What is the child policy for beds, meals and ages, in writing?
- Are heaters, pony, palki and pithu hire excluded?
- Is there a buffer day if flights are cancelled for weather?
- Can family or connecting rooms be arranged at Guptkashi?
- What are the cancellation terms if a family member falls ill?
Register the whole family on the Uttarakhand portal first, then use our Kedarnath helicopter booking guide for the members who will fly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Kedarnath tour package for a family with elderly parents?
Usually a private 4-5 day road package with a slower pace, plus helicopter seats or a palki for the parents. One operator, Namasteindiatrip, listed a Premium/Senior Care 4N/5D package from Rs 25,000 per person on twin sharing (checked 24 Sep 2026) and advises going private if anyone is above 60.
Can small children go to Kedarnath?
Yes, families do take children, but plan for the altitude, cold and the roughly 16 km route from Gaurikund. Children can walk part of the way and switch to a pithu or pony, or fly with a parent. Infants under 2 ride on a parent's lap on the helicopter.
Should the whole family take the helicopter?
Not necessarily. Many families fly only the members who cannot trek, such as elders or anyone with a health condition, while fit adults walk. This keeps costs down and makes it easier to get enough seats.
How many family members can be booked on one IRCTC HeliYatra ID?
Per IRCTC HeliYatra's instructions, one user ID can book up to 2 tickets with up to 6 passengers each, so 12 people in total. Larger groups need another user ID. Confirm on the portal before booking.
Is a medical check-up needed for the Kedarnath yatra?
The 2026 Char Dham health advisory, as reported, asks pilgrims, especially those from other states and the elderly, to get a check-up two to three weeks before travel and carry the report. Families with elders or members with heart, breathing or diabetes conditions should treat it as essential.
How many days does a Kedarnath family trip need?
Most family packages run 4 to 5 days from Haridwar, Dehradun or Delhi. A combined Do Dham trip listed at 7 nights / 8 days. Adding a buffer day for weather is wise when travelling with children or elders.
