Booking Overview

The Uttarakhand government centralised all Kedarnath helicopter bookings through the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) portal starting in 2023. This move was intended to eliminate the widespread practice of agents buying bulk seats and reselling at inflated prices, and to ensure that all pilgrims paid the same regulated fare.

As a result, the official and recommended booking channel is the IRCTC helicopter booking portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in or the IRCTC main website). Some private operators also maintain their own portals but all must list their Kedarnath services on IRCTC as well.

Important prerequisites before booking a helicopter:

• You must have completed your Kedarnath Yatra registration (separate from helicopter booking)
• You need a valid IRCTC account (separate from Yatra registration account)
• You need a government-issued photo ID for all passengers
• Payment is made online at time of booking

IRCTC Helicopter Booking — Step by Step

1. Go to the IRCTC helicopter portal: Navigate to heliyatra.irctc.co.in or through the main IRCTC website under the "Air" or "Helicopter" section.
2. Log in to your IRCTC account: Use your existing IRCTC credentials. If you don't have an account, create one first (see next section).
3. Select route: Choose your departure helipad (Phata, Sirsi, Guptkashi, or Agastmuni) and destination (Kedarnath).
4. Select date and flight: Available dates will show with slot counts. Choose your preferred date. Available flights with timings (usually multiple slots between 6 AM and 1 PM) will appear.
5. Choose operator: Multiple operators may offer the same route on the same date. Compare timing and pricing and select your preference.
6. Enter passenger details: Add each passenger's name, age, ID type and number, and your Yatra registration number. The name must exactly match the ID document.
7. Select fare type: Standard, economy, or premium (where available). Standard is adequate for most pilgrims.
8. Complete payment: Pay using UPI, credit/debit card, or net banking. IRCTC adds a service charge of ₹50–₹100 per transaction.
9. Download booking confirmation: You will receive an email confirmation and can download an e-ticket from your IRCTC account. Save this and carry a printed copy.

Creating an IRCTC Account

If you don't already have an IRCTC account (separate from your Yatra registration account), you'll need to create one:

1. Go to irctc.co.in and click "Register"
2. Fill in your personal details — name (as on ID), email, mobile number
3. Choose a username and strong password
4. Complete OTP verification for both mobile and email
5. Log in and update your profile with your ID proof details
6. Set up preferred payment method for faster booking

IRCTC accounts are free to create and are the same accounts used for train ticket bookings. If you have booked train tickets on IRCTC previously, use the same credentials.

Tip: During peak season, the IRCTC helicopter portal can be extremely slow or crash when helicopter slots open. Have your account fully set up and your ID details pre-saved in your profile before the booking opens.

Private Operator Booking (Alternative Channel)

While IRCTC is the primary and recommended booking channel, some approved operators also accept direct bookings through their own websites or offices. This can be useful when IRCTC slots appear sold out but the operator has held back some seats for direct sale.

If booking directly with an operator:

• Verify the operator is on the current DGCA-approved list for Kedarnath
• Confirm pricing matches the regulated rate (not significantly higher)
• Get a written/digital confirmation with the operator's letterhead
• Carry this confirmation to the helipad on the day of your flight
• Still complete your Yatra registration separately

Do not book through travel agents who claim to "have access" to helicopter seats. This is a known scam in the Kedarnath tourism ecosystem. If the price is significantly higher than the IRCTC rate, it's being marked up illegally.

What to Carry on the Day of Your Flight

• Helicopter e-ticket: Printed copy or on phone — have both to be safe
• Yatra registration QR code: Printed and on phone
• Government ID: The same document used for registration — original, not photocopy
• Maximum 5 kg of luggage: Weighed strictly at check-in; excess charges apply
• Warm clothing in your carry-on: The helipad waiting area and Kedarnath itself are cold even in summer
• Medications: Altitude sickness tablets (Diamox) if prescribed by your doctor; personal medications
• Snacks and water: You may wait at the helipad for 1–2 hours before your flight
• Cash: Kedarnath has limited ATM facilities; carry cash for offerings, food, and incidentals

Helipad Check-In Process

Arrive at the departure helipad at least 90 minutes before your scheduled flight time. The typical check-in process at Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi helipads:

1. Queue at registration counter: Present your helicopter e-ticket and Yatra registration
2. ID verification: Your ID is checked against the booking details — exact name match required
3. Luggage weighing: All bags are weighed — excess is either left behind or charged (approx. ₹100–₹200 per kg)
4. Security check: Standard security screening
5. Safety briefing: A short safety video or briefing is given before boarding
6. Boarding call: You'll be called in groups of 5–6 passengers (helicopter capacity) for boarding
7. Flight to Kedarnath: 7–12 minute flight depending on helipad
8. At Kedarnath helipad: Disembark, follow the 500m path to the temple

If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to weather, you'll be informed at the helipad. Keep patience — weather delays are common and the operators will reschedule you to the next available slot or offer a refund.

Booking Tips for 2026

• Book the moment slots open: Popular dates (especially Mondays and opening week) sell out within minutes. Have everything set up and be ready at the portal when slots open.
• Try early morning flights: First flight of the day (usually 6–7 AM) is least likely to be cancelled due to afternoon weather buildup. It also gives you maximum time at Kedarnath.
• Book return on same day if day-tripping: If you're not staying overnight, book return the same day — operators typically reserve return slots for morning departures.
• Pack light deliberately: The 5 kg limit is strictly enforced. Leave non-essential items in your accommodation at Guptkashi or Sonprayag.
• Download offline: Download the e-ticket and save it offline — mobile data at the helipad can be unreliable.
• Yatra registration first: Complete your Yatra registration before attempting helicopter booking — some portals now require your registration number at checkout.
