How to reach Kedarnath from Mumbai: the three gateway options

There is no direct way from Mumbai to the Kedarnath Temple. Every route has two halves: a long-distance leg from Mumbai to a gateway town in Uttarakhand, then a mountain drive to Sonprayag, the last motorable point, where the trek from Gaurikund begins. Your choice of gateway decides how many days the whole trip takes.

Fly to Dehradun (Jolly Grant)

Nonstop flights operate between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, with a flight time of roughly two hours; check the airlines for the current schedule. Jolly Grant is about 240 km by road from Sonprayag, and Rishikesh sits close to the airport, so many travellers land, rest one night near Rishikesh and drive up the next morning. For most people from Mumbai this is the fastest option.

Fly or take the train to Delhi, then road

Delhi has far more flights and trains from Mumbai, which helps when Dehradun fares are high or seats are sold out. The catch is the road: Delhi is about 460 km from Sonprayag, a 12 to 14 hour drive. Most group packages that "start from Delhi" spend a full day getting to Haridwar or Rishikesh before the hills even begin.

Rail to Haridwar or Rishikesh

Mumbai has a daily direct train to Haridwar: 19019 Bandra Terminus-Haridwar Express (formerly the Dehradun Express), a journey of about 32 hours over roughly 1,616 km. It is the budget option and avoids a change in Delhi, but it adds about a day and a half each way. Confirm the current schedule and availability on IRCTC before you plan around it. From Haridwar, Sonprayag is about 230 km (8 to 9 hours); from Rishikesh, about 215 km.

How many days a Kedarnath trip from Mumbai takes

Build the plan backwards from the mountain. The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is roughly 16 to 18 km depending on the source, and most walkers need a full day to go up. Add a day for darshan and the descent, a day for the drive in and out, and one buffer day for weather or landslides on the Rudraprayag stretch.

So a flight-based trek plan is 6 days, 7 with the buffer. If you take the train to Haridwar instead, add about three days in total, which makes it 8 to 9 days.

Helicopter plan

A helicopter shuttle from Phata, Sersi (Sirsi) or Guptkashi replaces the trek. If you fly up and back on the same day, you can save a day compared with the trek plan. Mountain weather can delay flights, so keep the buffer day anyway. By air from Mumbai, a helicopter plan usually works out to 5 to 6 days.

Adding Badrinath (Do Dham)

Many families from Mumbai combine Kedarnath with Badrinath, the Do Dham route that forms half of the Char Dham circuit. Badrinath is a separate drive, so it adds several days. Ask any agent to show both temples, road days and buffer days separately on the itinerary.

1. Complete Kedarnath Yatra registration with Uttarakhand Tourism for every traveller. It is mandatory and separate from the helicopter booking.
2. Create your own IRCTC HeliYatra account; this is separate from a normal IRCTC rail login.

4. Only then fix your Mumbai flights or train, so the dates line up with your helicopter slot.

Kedarnath closing date 2026: can you still go this season?

What is officially known as of 30 September 2026

As of 30 September 2026, the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee had not published the 2026 closing date. By tradition, the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC) declares the date on Vijayadashami, and the temple closes on Bhai Dooj. If you are planning from Mumbai for October or early November, keep the whole plan flexible, carry warm clothing (nights get very cold late in the season) and avoid non-refundable flights until the closing date is out.

If your trip slips to 2027

After closing, the Kedarnath deity is taken to Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath, where winter worship continues. You can visit Ukhimath in winter by road. For the main temple, wait for the BKTC to announce the 2027 opening date (the 2026 season opened in late April), then book registration, helicopter and flights in that order.
