Kedarnath Ropeway Status 2026: Route, Timeline, Options
Key takeaways
- The Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway is approved and awarded, not operating; no opening date had been announced as of 17 October 2026.
- Official facts (PIB, March 2025): 12.9 km, 3S gondola, Rs 4,081.28 crore, about 36 minutes one way, 18,000 passengers a day by design.
- Adani Enterprises received the Letter of Award from NHLML on 15 September 2025, with a six-year build and 29 years of operation.
- For 2027, use the helicopter (IRCTC HeliYatra only), the 16-km trek, a pony or a palki; there are no ropeway tickets to buy.
The Kedarnath ropeway is not open, and you cannot ride it on your next yatra. The 12.9 km Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway was approved by the Union Cabinet on 5 March 2025 and awarded to Adani Enterprises on 15 September 2025 with a six-year build period. For 2027, plan the helicopter, trek, pony or palki instead.
News reports about the project tend to blur three different things: approval, award and construction. This page separates the three, sets out the official project facts with their sources, explains what the ropeway will change for pilgrims once it runs, and shows what to use until then. It also covers a practical risk: offers of "ropeway tickets" for a service that does not yet exist. Everything here was checked on 17 October 2026, and no completion date had been announced as of that day.
Is the Kedarnath ropeway open?
No. As of October 2026 the Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway is a sanctioned and awarded project, not an operating service. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) release of 5 March 2025 records approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). Adani Enterprises Ltd then announced on 15 September 2025 that it had received the Letter of Award from National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), the awarding authority. Adani's release gives a construction period of six years from the award.
PIB's Year End Review 2025 for the road transport ministry lists the Sonprayag-Kedarnath and Govindghat-Hemkund Sahib ropeways together as two projects totalling 25.45 km "awarded on DBFOT basis". That is the latest official status we found. Searches on 17 October 2026 turned up no report of construction completion, a trial run or an opening date, so any page promising that the ropeway will carry passengers in a specific year is speculating.
For pilgrims, the practical answer is simple. The ropeway does not change how you reach Kedarnath in 2027. The trek from Gaurikund, ponies, palkis and helicopter shuttles remain the only options, and helicopter seats remain bookable only through IRCTC HeliYatra. Our guide on how to book a Kedarnath helicopter covers that process, which is where most travellers who hoped for a ropeway end up.
Kedarnath ropeway project facts
The figures below come from the official sources named in the right-hand column. Where a figure is a design target, such as travel time or capacity, we say so; none of it has been tested in service yet.
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Sonprayag to Kedarnath | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Length | 12.9 km | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Technology | Tri-cable detachable gondola (3S) | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Design capacity | 1,800 passengers per hour per direction; 18,000 passengers per day | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Travel time | About 36 minutes one way, against 8-9 hours today | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Capital cost | Rs 4,081.28 crore | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Delivery model | Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT), public-private partnership | PIB, 5 March 2025 |
| Awarding body | National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) | Adani Enterprises, 15 September 2025 |
| Concessionaire | Adani Enterprises Ltd | Adani Enterprises, 15 September 2025 |
| Build and operation | Six years to build; 29 years of operation after construction | Adani Enterprises, 15 September 2025 |
The project sits under the National Ropeways Development Programme, known as Parvatmala Pariyojana. A 3S gondola runs on three cables per line, two that carry the cabins and one that hauls them. Kedarnath Temple, the destination, stands at 3,583 metres in Rudraprayag district, and PIB estimates that about 20 lakh pilgrims visit each season. That load is the main argument for the ropeway.
Timeline: from wildlife clearance to contract award
The Kedarnath ropeway has been discussed for years, but only a handful of dated milestones are on the record. This timeline lists those we could source, with the source for each.
| Date | Milestone | Source |
|---|---|---|
| October 2022 | National Board for Wildlife clearance for the Kedarnath ropeway, as reported in the press | ETV Bharat report, 14 October 2022 |
| 5 March 2025 | CCEA approves the 12.9 km Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway at Rs 4,081.28 crore on DBFOT | PIB |
| 15 September 2025 | Adani Enterprises receives the Letter of Award from NHLML; six-year construction period stated | Adani Enterprises media release; Outlook Business |
| End of 2025 | Ministry year-end review lists the project as awarded on DBFOT, alongside Govindghat-Hemkund Sahib | PIB Year End Review 2025 |
| 17 October 2026 | No completion, trial run or opening date announced in our searches | Our search of news and official releases |
The gap between award and service is the part most news stories skip. A letter of award starts the contract; the six-year build period stated by Adani runs from there, and high-altitude work in the Himalaya can be limited by weather each year. That is why we do not give an opening year. When NHLML or the Uttarakhand government announces a date, this page will be updated.
What the ropeway will change for pilgrims
Sonprayag start vs the Gaurikund trek
Today the road ends at Gaurikund, and PIB describes the onward route as a 16-km uphill trek, done on foot or by pony, palanquin or helicopter. The ropeway is planned to start lower down at Sonprayag, where pilgrims already park and change to shuttle vehicles, and run all the way to Kedarnath. If it performs as designed, a journey that now takes most walkers eight to nine hours one way would take about 36 minutes.
That could change the shape of a Kedarnath trip. Many pilgrims now spend a night at Kedarnath because the trek up and down cannot be done comfortably in one day. A working ropeway would make a same-day return possible for far more people, including elders and pilgrims with health conditions who cannot trek and cannot get a helicopter seat. It could also reduce reliance on ponies and mules on the trail.
Capacity vs today's options
The design capacity of 18,000 passengers a day is large next to the present alternatives. Helicopter seats are limited by flight slots, weather and the number of operators approved for each season, and they sell fast when IRCTC HeliYatra releases each batch. A ropeway with that capacity would not end demand for helicopters, but it could take pressure off the trek and the booking portal on peak days. All of this is a design figure until the line actually opens.
Until then: helicopter, trek, pony or palki
Until the ropeway runs, these are the real choices for 2027. Helicopter fares in the table are the 2026 season's base round-trip fares fixed by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA); 2027 fares have not been announced.
| Option | Starts from | Time to the temple | 2026 cost basis | How to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Helicopter shuttle | Sersi/Sitapur, Phata or Guptkashi helipads | Short flight plus walk from the Kedarnath helipad | Round trip Rs 6,086 (Sersi/Sitapur), Rs 9,680 (Phata), Rs 12,154 (Guptkashi), plus GST and IRCTC fee | Only on IRCTC HeliYatra |
| Trek on foot | Gaurikund | About 8-9 hours one way for most walkers (16 km per PIB) | Free, apart from food and stay | No booking; registration needed |
| Pony or mule | Gaurikund | Faster than walking, still most of a day | Rates set locally each season | At the Gaurikund base |
| Palki or doli | Gaurikund | Similar to a pony | Rates set locally each season | At the Gaurikund base |
If you are weighing the first two rows, our helicopter vs trek comparison sets out time, cost and fitness trade-offs in detail. Pilgrims who cannot walk the trail and cannot secure a helicopter seat usually take a palki or pony; our doli and palki charges guide explains how those services are booked and priced at the base.
Whatever you choose, Char Dham registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory and free, and it should be done before you book transport. Keep a buffer day in your plan: helicopter shuttles pause in poor visibility, and the trail can close after heavy rain.
Beware of "ropeway ticket" offers
Because the project has been in the news, some pilgrims search for Kedarnath ropeway tickets or ropeway booking. There is nothing to book. No ticketing system, fare or booking channel for the Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway had been announced as of 17 October 2026, and the concessionaire has not opened sales. Any website, social media page or WhatsApp contact offering ropeway tickets, advance ropeway seats or a "ropeway package" for 2027 is not selling a real service.
The same caution applies to helicopter tickets. Official Kedarnath helicopter seats are sold only through IRCTC HeliYatra. Fake booking offers are a known risk around the yatra, and the ropeway news gives scammers a new hook. A few rules keep you safe:
- Do not pay anyone for ropeway access until an official fare and booking channel are announced by the government or the operator.
- Book helicopter seats only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, never through a personal UPI ID or bank account.
- Treat any promise of a "guaranteed" seat or VIP ropeway pass as a warning sign.
- Check project news against the PIB website or official Uttarakhand government announcements.

How the Kedarnath ropeway fits wider plans
The Kedarnath line is one of two Uttarakhand ropeways that PIB lists together under Parvatmala. The other runs from Govindghat to the Sikh shrine of Hemkund Sahib, and PIB's year-end review lists both as awarded. Read the official PIB release on the ropeway approval for the full project description.
Until there is a dated opening announcement, the sensible approach is to plan your Kedarnath trip as if the ropeway does not exist, while watching for official news. When it does open, the change will be large: the hardest stretch of the yatra reduced to a cable-car ride from Sonprayag.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kedarnath ropeway open?
No. The Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway was approved in March 2025 and awarded to Adani Enterprises in September 2025. As of 17 October 2026 no completion or opening date had been announced, so pilgrims still use the trek, ponies, palkis or helicopters.
When will the Kedarnath ropeway be completed?
No official completion date has been announced. Adani Enterprises stated a six-year construction period from the September 2025 award. Treat any specific opening year as speculation until NHLML or the Uttarakhand government confirms it.
How long is the Kedarnath ropeway?
The approved ropeway is 12.9 km from Sonprayag to Kedarnath, according to the PIB release of 5 March 2025. It is designed to cut the one-way journey from about 8-9 hours to roughly 36 minutes.
Who is building the Kedarnath ropeway?
Adani Enterprises Ltd received the Letter of Award from National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) on 15 September 2025. The project is a DBFOT public-private partnership, with 29 years of operation after construction.
Can I book Kedarnath ropeway tickets?
No. No ticketing system or fare has been announced. Anyone selling ropeway tickets or seats now is not selling a real service. Helicopter seats, the main alternative, are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra.
