Kedarnath Booking Checklist: What to Book & When

For Kedarnath booking 2026 and beyond, book in this order: Char Dham yatra registration first, then the IRCTC HeliYatra helicopter (if flying), then your base-camp stay, then long-distance travel to Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun, and finally the road transfer. Registration is mandatory and unlocks the helicopter booking, so it always comes first.

Most Kedarnath trips that go wrong fail on sequence, not effort. People book non-refundable trains and hotels, then discover helicopter seats are gone or registration for their date is full. This checklist lays out every booking a Kedarnath yatra needs, the lead time for each in peak and off-peak weeks, what can be cancelled, and the documents to carry, so each booking protects the next one.

The logic is simple: book the most constrained, least flexible thing first, and the most flexible, easiest-to-change things last.

Kedarnath booking 2026: lead times by season

How early you need to book depends heavily on when you travel. Demand is extreme around the opening fortnight and in May–June school holidays, drops sharply in the monsoon, and returns in September–October with better weather and fewer crowds.

Step 1: Char Dham yatra registration

Every pilgrim — including children — needs a registration for the date they will be on the Kedarnath route. It is done on the official Uttarakhand registration and tourist care portal or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. You create an account, add a trip with your dates and dhams, and enter each traveller's name, age, mobile number and ID details such as Aadhaar or passport. The downloaded registration letter carries a QR code checked on the route, and its number is required on the helicopter booking form.

Step 2: the helicopter, if you are flying

Base-fare shuttle seats from Guptkashi, Phata and Sersi are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, in windows announced shortly before they open. In the 2026 season, for example, the window for 1–15 October journeys opened on 22 September. Create your HeliYatra login days before, keep a sheet with every passenger's name, age, weight, ID number and registration number, and be online early on release day. Reported 2026 round-trip base fares were about ₹6,390 from Sersi, ₹10,164 from Phata and ₹12,762 from Guptkashi, plus a convenience fee and GST.

If you do not get seats, do not book everything else around a helicopter you do not have. Either hunt cancellations over the next few days, switch helipads, move to a midweek date, or plan the trek from Gaurikund instead.

Step 3 and 4: where to stay, and when to book it

Your base depends on how you are reaching the temple:

• Flying from Guptkashi: stay in Guptkashi. It has the widest choice of hotels and a road connection to Rudraprayag.
• Flying from Phata or Sersi: stay in Phata, Sersi or nearby villages on the Guptkashi–Sonprayag road to avoid an early-morning drive.
• Trekking: stay in Sitapur or Sonprayag the night before. Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag; shared shuttles run to Gaurikund, where the 16–18 km trek begins.
• Overnight at Kedarnath: GMVN and a limited number of lodges and tents operate near the temple. Rooms are basic and scarce in peak weeks, so book early if you want to attend the early-morning puja or split the trek.

Choose free-cancellation rates wherever possible. That single habit means a change in helicopter dates or a weather delay costs you nothing at the hotel.

Step 5 and 6: getting to the base

Haridwar and Rishikesh are the main rail heads; Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun is the nearest airport. From any of them it is a full day by road to Guptkashi or Sonprayag via Rudraprayag, typically 7–10 hours depending on traffic, landslide work and stops. Plan to arrive at the base the evening before your flight or trek, not on the same morning. On the return leg, leave a buffer day before a fixed train or flight home, because weather holds on helicopters and road closures in the Mandakini valley are routine.

Booking for the rest of the 2026 season

If you are reading this in late September or October 2026, the checklist still applies, but the timings compress. The post-monsoon weeks are among the best of the year for the yatra: the air is clear after the rains, the peaks are visible, and crowds are thinner than in May and June. The trade-off is colder nights, shorter daylight and a hard stop when the temple closes on Bhai Dooj, expected in the second week of November 2026, after which the deity's winter seat moves to Ukhimath.

For an October or early-November trip, register for your date straight away and watch the HeliYatra portal for each fortnightly window. Book base hotels with free cancellation now, because many properties near the temple wind down through late October and the ones that stay open fill quickly around Diwali. Pack for near-freezing mornings at the top even if the valley feels mild. The last few days before closing are the most contested of the autumn season, so if your dates are flexible, the first half of October usually gives the best mix of weather, seats and rooms. If the closing date is announced and your helicopter date is at risk of being too late, move the trip earlier rather than hoping for a later window that may never be released.

Planning for 2027 instead? Use the same order, but start the clock at Maha Shivaratri, when the next opening date is announced, and have registration done before the first helicopter window appears.

Common booking mistakes to avoid

• Booking non-refundable trains and hotels before registration and helicopter are confirmed. Reverse the order and you are stuck.
• Name mismatches. A spelling difference between the ID, registration and helicopter ticket can stop you at boarding.
• Same-day return travel. One weather hold and your homeward train is gone.
• Paying "agents" for guaranteed helicopter tickets or registration. Both are available only through official portals.
• Ignoring the season calendar. The Kedarnath Temple closes on Bhai Dooj in November and reopens in late April or May; helicopter services pause in the monsoon months.
